Group I of the 2026 World Cup is already entering its decisive phase following the first round of fixtures. This is particularly true for Senegal, who began with a defeat against one of the hot favourites to lift the trophy, France. Mbappé proved too much for Pape Thiaw’s side, who eventually succumbed 3–1; they must now bounce back quickly if they are to reach the round of 32. Up next is Haaland’s Norway, who made a winning return after a 28-year absence: a 1-4 victory over Iraq, with a brace from their star player. Should the Vikings be taken seriously, or do the African champions (on the pitch) still have plenty to say?

Starting with Solbakken’s men, we must acknowledge their superb performance at the start of the tournament. It’s not easy to kick off with such determination in attack when you’ve been absent from a tournament like this for so many years. But with the talisman they have up front – highly motivated to play in his first World Cup – alongside Sorloth, a top-class playmaker like Odegaard and full-backs who deliver pinpoint crosses like Wolfe, it all makes sense. The Norwegians have plenty of potential up front: the Iraqis conceded four, but it could have been more as Erling missed a one-on-one. As if that weren’t enough, they’re also a threat from set pieces: Ajer is 1.96m tall, Heggem 1.92m, and Ostigard – already a goalscorer, though ‘only’ 1.82m tall – has a jumping power that’s very difficult to stop. The Vikings could finish second.

To finish in a qualifying position, they’ll have to get the better of the best team in Africa, alongside Morocco. With Sadio Mané, still only 34, as their key player and decisive figures around him such as Sarr, Gueye and Mbaye, the Lions of Teranga still have a lot to say in this group. In fact, for long stretches they had the French well under control. Their intensity, tactical discipline and ability to create chances in a matter of seconds – as demonstrated last Tuesday – suggest they can secure the next six points up for grabs. They give the impression of being a well-drilled and combative side.

Therefore, having analysed these two sides and highlighted their formidable goal-scoring ability, and bearing in mind that the option of backing Senegal is very attractive (odds of €3.10 per euro staked), the real value here lies in the prospect of both sides finding the net. Given their style of play, the way they push forward and, above all, the quality of their strikers, this should come off, and the odds are really high. It’s worth a go.
