Canada and Morocco will kick off the World Cup round of 16 this coming Saturday at 1.00 pm Houston time. The match will be played at NRG Stadium, which was the first stadium in the United States to feature a retractable roof.

Barring a major upset, the winner will face France in the quarter-finals – the team that has shown the strongest case for lifting the trophy so far.

Canada may have peaked

After a strong start to the World Cup, the Canadians go into this round having raised some doubts in their last two matches. They lost their final group stage match 2–1 to Switzerland and then needed a 92nd-minute goal to beat South Africa in the round of 32.

That goal came from a long-range shot by Eustaquio as the match was heading into extra time. Up until then, Canada had struggled to get the better of an African side that had looked rather limited during the group stage.

The freshness and attacking dynamism we saw in their opening matches were absent in this tie. The pressure inherent in a knockout tie probably played a part, but the reality is that the team left a lot to be desired.

For one reason or another, Jesse Marsch’s side cast doubt on their true calibre and their ability to progress further in the tournament.

Morocco confirm their aspirations to go far

The Moroccans knocked out the Netherlands on penalties after a 1–1 draw in normal time and extra time.

Despite this scoreline, the African side were clearly the better team. Particularly in the second half, Morocco were clearly the better side and had enough chances to avoid going to penalties.

Morocco are giving off a very positive impression. They are a recognisable, solid unit with a very clear game plan.

Furthermore, they have players capable of making a real difference. Hakimi is having a spectacular tournament, with a huge influence both in defence and attack. His ability to pop up on both the inside and the outside provides the team with plenty of options.

The Africans are proving that reaching the semi-finals at the previous World Cup was no fluke. They give the impression of being a side ready to compete against anyone, as we also saw against Brazil in their opening match of the tournament (which ended 1–1).

A potential quarter-final clash with France would be a test of the highest calibre, but first they must get through a tie in which I believe they are the undisputed favourites.

Canada v Morocco Prediction

I think we’re looking at two teams at very different stages of their campaigns.

Canada made a good impression at the start, but their form has dipped as the tournament has progressed. Morocco, on the other hand, seem to be improving as the competition gets tougher.

The problems the Canadians had in overcoming South Africa could be compounded against a much more organised side with greater collective quality.

Furthermore, if Morocco manage to dictate the pace and maintain possession for longer periods, Canada could struggle. They do not seem like a team built to spend long periods defending near their own penalty area or to play without taking the initiative.

The Canadians are used to carrying the weight of many matches within their own confederation. Here, they will face a highly organised opponent who knows exactly how to compete in matches of this calibre and is currently brimming with confidence.

For all these reasons, I believe Morocco are a cut above in this tie. The odds have already dropped since the market opened, but I still see value in the bets favouring the African side, both for a win within 90 minutes and for progression to the quarter-finals.
