One of the most evenly matched Round of 32 fixtures is the clash between Belgium and Senegal this Wednesday in Miami, at 5.00 pm local time.

Although Belgium are the bookmakers’ favourites, the Africans have more than enough to give the Europeans a run for their money and cause them plenty of problems. This is undoubtedly one of the most evenly matched ties in this round.

Let’s analyse how both teams are shaping up and where the value might lie in this match, although for a more comprehensive and in-depth analysis, including information on line-ups and key players, we invite you to read our preview of Belgium v Senegal.

Belgium improved their performance in their last match

After two opening matches that left plenty of doubts, the Belgian side improved their performance in their final group match. They thrashed New Zealand 5–1, securing top spot in Group G on goal difference, as Egypt also finished on five points.

The Belgians remain unbeaten in the tournament, although they were unable to beat either Egypt or Iran. Against Iran, they played the final half-hour with ten men and settled for a draw, whilst against Egypt they managed a rather lacklustre 1-1 draw.

The Belgian side still boasts plenty of talent, but no longer exudes the sense of power that characterised the generation which reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup.

Courtois, De Bruyne, Doku, Trossard, Lukaku and Tielemans continue to form a top-class backbone. However, some are no longer at the peak of their careers and the team lacks the squad depth it had in previous years.

Even so, Belgium still have enough quality to compete in these knockout stages and create chances against virtually any opponent.

Senegal qualified as one of the best third-placed teams.

Senegal secured their place with a 5-0 thrashing of Iraq on the final matchday. They had to win and also needed to improve their goal difference to stand a chance of qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams.

The Africans capitalised on the circumstances of the match, helped by Iraq’s early sending-off. However, despite qualifying, Senegal’s performances in the tournament have not been entirely convincing.

They are a side with quality players and interesting attacking options, but they have shown lapses in concentration during long stretches of matches. This inconsistency has cost them dearly in defence.

France and Norway each scored three goals against them, exposing a defensive fragility that could become a serious problem in a knockout tie.

Belgium v Senegal Prediction

I expect a fairly evenly matched game between two teams that have some strengths, but also significant weaknesses.

Senegal concede too many goals at the back. This is partly down to tactical errors and partly to a lack of individual sharpness. Belgium have enough quality to capitalise on those errors and create scoring opportunities.

On the other hand, the Africans have also shown they have the resources to cause damage in attack. They have scored in all their group matches and face a Belgium side that has not looked particularly solid when put under pressure by their opponents.

For that reason, I find the goals market more appealing than picking a winner.

I find it hard to see Senegal keeping a clean sheet for the full ninety minutes, but I also struggle to imagine Belgium getting through the match without conceding chances. I think we’ll see a match with chances at both ends.

The kick-off time does present a slight drawback. Playing in Miami at 5.00 pm local time could affect the pace of the match, particularly at certain stages.

For that reason, I prefer to be a bit more cautious and hedge the bet with a low line. With the ‘over 2 goals’ bet, a third goal would make the prediction a winner, and if the match ends with exactly two goals, we’d get our stake back.
