Who can reach the First Division play-offs on the final day?

The First Division final day permutations are deliciously messy. Cork City have already secured League of Ireland promotion, but four clubs are fighting over two remaining play-off places on Friday, 16 October. One Midlands derby, a difficult assignment for Kerry and a must-win trip for Cobh could redraw the table in ninety minutes. Keep the live standings open; the fifth-place line may not stay still.
League of Ireland First Division final-day fixtures
All five matches kick off at 19:45 Irish time. There is no staggered finish to help clubs calculate what they need, although added time could still produce a late surprise.
| Friday 16 October | Venue |
|---|---|
| Finn Harps v Bray Wanderers | Finn Park |
| Kerry FC v Cork City | Mounthawk Park |
| Longford Town v Athlone Town | Bishopsgate |
| Treaty United v Cobh Ramblers | Markets Field |
| Wexford v UCD | Ferrycarrig Park |
First Division table before the final round
Points and goal difference decide the tension. Bray and UCD have already qualified for the play-offs; the real squeeze is below them.
| Club | Points | GD |
|---|---|---|
| Bray Wanderers | 54 | +16 |
| UCD | 53 | +13 |
| Kerry FC | 51 | +4 |
| Longford Town | 49 | +2 |
| Cobh Ramblers | 49 | -6 |
| Athlone Town | 48 | 0 |
Cork lead with 74 points. Wexford, Treaty and Finn Harps cannot reach the promotion play-offs, although Wexford and Treaty still have lower-table positions to settle.
Who can reach the LOI play-offs?
- Bray Wanderers: A win guarantees second. UCD can take that position by winning if Bray drop points.
- UCD: Already through. Winning at Wexford puts pressure on Bray for the higher seed.
- Kerry FC: Beat champions Cork and qualification is certain. A draw could also suffice, but creates a potential goal-difference headache.
- Longford Town: Beat Athlone and qualification is likely, but not certain: a huge Cobh goal-difference swing alongside a Kerry win could still deny them. A draw may suffice if Cobh fail to win.
- Cobh Ramblers: Must win at Treaty, then hope Kerry or Longford slip. Their poor goal difference matters if clubs finish level.
- Athlone Town: Must win at Longford, then need Cobh to slip or Kerry to lose heavily enough to overturn goal difference.
Longford manager Wayne Groves anticipates the tension:
“When it catches fire, strap yourselves in.” Wayne Groves
Final-day odds: four results worth watching
The prices below concern individual ninety-minute results, not which club ultimately qualifies. An attractive match price can still be a poor promotion bet if another ground produces the wrong score.
I prefer Longford at home to a complicated multi-match accumulator. Athlone’s desperation makes the derby volatile, however, so do not confuse motivation with a guaranteed result.
How do the promotion play-offs work?
Finishing second is not just decoration. It earns a semi-final against fifth instead of fourth, although a side arriving with momentum can make either route treacherous. That is why Bray and UCD still have something tangible to chase.
The teams finishing second to fifth enter semi-finals, pairing second with fifth and third with fourth. The two-legged semi-finals are on 24 and 27 October, followed by the final on 1 November. The surviving First Division side then faces the Premier Division’s ninth-placed team for a top-flight place.
