How Does Ireland’s New Third-Tier Football League Work?

The FAI National League third tier is Ireland’s newest football experiment, and its appeal has little to do with glossy launch videos. Fifteen clubs, from Donegal to Waterford, now have a national stage between the grassroots game and the League of Ireland. The first season brings three compact groups, a November final and no promotion yet. That detail deserves attention.
What Is the FAI National League?
The competition began on 29 August 2026 as the highest level of men’s amateur football beneath the League of Ireland. It is commonly described as the Irish football third division, although it is not formally one of the two League of Ireland divisions. The inaugural campaign is short. Clubs play home and away within their groups, building toward semi-finals and a final in November. It gives community clubs national exposure without pretending the pyramid has changed overnight.
FAI National League Teams: All 15 Clubs and Groups
There is a genuine geographical spread, although each group contains only five sides.
| Group 1 | Group 2 | Group 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Bonagee United | Letterkenny Rovers | CK United |
| Cockhill Celtic | Mayo FC | Killarney Celtic |
| Home Farm DCU | Salthill Devon | Newbridge Town |
| Lucan United | St Francis | UCC |
| Mervue United | TU Dublin | Villa FC |
Each club faces its four group rivals twice, making eight matches. The programme is spread across ten scheduled rounds because one team in each five-club group sits out on each matchday.
That uneven rhythm matters for anyone following the standings. A team behind on points may also have a match in hand, which makes premature conclusions especially risky.
How Are the Semi-Finalists and Champions Decided?
The title race has a neat structure, but the final qualifying place leaves room for genuine late drama.
| Position | Next step |
|---|---|
| Group 1 winner | Semi-final |
| Group 2 winner | Semi-final |
| Group 3 winner | Semi-final |
| Best runner-up overall | Semi-final |
| Semi-final winners | November final |
The best runner-up must be compared across groups, so points and the relevant tie-breaking criteria deserve attention as the last fixtures approach. Winning your own group remains the clearest route.
Promotion to League of Ireland First Division: When Does It Start?
A fuller competition is planned for spring 2027. Under the FAI’s outlined pathway, a licensed National League champion could face the bottom First Division club in a promotion-relegation play-off for a 2028 place. Final eligibility criteria still require approval.
This could make the competition transformative for clubs with realistic ambitions beyond local football, but it is not a shortcut into senior league status. Grounds and licensing will matter alongside results.
FAI National League Betting: Are Decimal Odds Available?
New competitions do not automatically receive comprehensive betting coverage. Decimal odds of 2.50 would return €25 on a winning €10 stake, but this is only an illustration, not a listed FAI price.
