Derry City vs Dundalk Prediction (FAI Cup) Odds and Bets 06.09.2026

Derry City and Dundalk meet at the Brandywell with a place in the FAI Cup semi-finals on the line, and I reckon this is far tighter than the home advantage might suggest. Derry have carried a real threat going forward lately, but two damaging second-half collapses have exposed a side that still looks vulnerable without the ball. Dundalk, meanwhile, sit above them in the Premier Division and arrive off a morale-boosting Louth derby win. The big question for me is whether Derry can control the game once they get on top — because Dundalk have shown they can stay alive in messy matches.

How Derry City and Dundalk Come Into the Match
Derry City Form
Derry are difficult to assess at the minute because their attacking football has improved without the results becoming any more predictable. Since Mark Connolly took interim charge in early August, City have beaten Sligo Rovers 2-0 and UCD 2-1, but the last two league matches tell the more important story for this bet. They lost 5-3 at Bohemians after leading and then went 3-1 up against league leaders Shamrock Rovers before being pegged back to 3-3.
That gives me two very different signals: Derry are creating enough to hurt good sides, but managing matches remains an issue. Michael Duffy is in particularly sharp form and scored again against Rovers, while Ellis Chapman struck twice in that match. Brian Maher was only fit enough for the bench last weekend, with Tom Norcott starting in goal.
Dundalk Form
Dundalk’s league form has hardly been flying either. They had won only one of their previous five Premier Division games heading into this tie, but that win was a useful one: a 3-2 victory away to Drogheda, settled by Daryl Horgan’s 89th-minute free-kick. Ciarán Kilduff’s side are fourth in the table on 40 points, six ahead of Derry after 29 matches.
Horgan is still the man I trust most in this Dundalk side. He has ten league goals and ten assists this season and played a direct part in both goals when Dundalk beat Derry 2-1 at Oriel Park in May. There have been important squad changes, though: Eoin Kenny and Gbemi Arubi left during the summer after contributing 18 goals between them in the first half of the campaign. Danny Mullen is also out, while several defenders and goalkeeper Conor Kearns have had spells on the sidelines.
The encouraging bit for Kilduff is that the newer faces are already contributing. Cian Dillon scored in the Drogheda win, with Tom Grivosti also involved in the equaliser.
Key Factors in My Derry City vs Dundalk Prediction
1. Derry Are Dangerous — But Not Closing Matches Out
Scoring three against both Bohemians and Shamrock Rovers shows the ceiling of this Derry attack. Conceding eight across those same two matches is the other side of it.
Most worrying for me is the pattern rather than the raw number. City held half-time leads in both games and collected only one point. Against Rovers, they were 3-1 ahead before conceding twice in the final 20 minutes.
2. Dundalk Have Already Made Life Awkward for Derry This Year
These sides have met three times in the 2026 Premier Division and Dundalk are unbeaten across those meetings.
The first two finished 2-2, before the Lilywhites won 2-1 at Oriel Park in May. Four of the last six meetings overall have been draws, so I wouldn’t be rushing to back either side at a short price.
3. Home Advantage Matters, but It Is Already in the Price
Dundalk have not won at the Brandywell since 2022, which is the biggest warning against going too aggressive on the away side. Derry will also be encouraged by the way they opened up Shamrock Rovers there last weekend.
That said, the 1X2 market already makes Derry the favourite at around 2.02, with the draw at 3.60 and Dundalk at 3.06. For me, that leaves more room on the Dundalk side than on Derry.
4. Cup Form Needs Some Context
Both have won their opening two FAI Cup ties, but neither route tells the whole story.
Derry beat Tolka Rovers 3-0 and UCD 2-1. Dundalk beat St Mochta’s 3-1 before putting eight past Castlebar Celtic. That’s 11 goals in two cup games for Dundalk, although both opponents came from outside the Premier Division. Derry’s UCD win at least came against a side competing strongly in the First Division.
5. The Price Is What Swings Me Towards Dundalk
This isn’t a case of me thinking Dundalk are miles better. They’re not.
It’s about what I’m being asked to pay. Derry at just over even money feels a touch short for a team sitting below Dundalk in the league, conceding heavily in its last two matches and winless against the Lilywhites in three meetings this season.
The Draw or Dundalk price around 1.65 is the one that catches my eye. I’d still consider it playable at 1.60 or better.

| 2026 FAI Cup goals conceded | 1 | 1 |
| 2026 H2H | 0W-2D-1L | 1W-2D-0L |
League positions and records are current going into the cup weekend. Recent results give Derry 11 goals scored and ten conceded across their last five competitive matches, while Dundalk have scored 15 and conceded eight — although the Lilywhites’ 8-0 cup win over Castlebar Celtic obviously inflates that attacking figure.
For me, the H2H line is more useful. Three meetings this season, two draws and a Dundalk win, with both teams scoring in all three. It fits the broader picture here: there is very little between these sides, and that makes taking a bit of insurance on Dundalk more appealing than backing a short-priced home win.
